What's the Council skillset and the commitment needed?

This post want to define in a better way what are the skillset that a council member must have and the time commitment needed to be considered in order to be efficient in the role of a council member.

This set of skills was defined based on actions that the council has performed in the past.

###What activities has the Council done in the past

  • Participate in the OI monthly meetings (monthly)
  • Shape and give feedback on the CD OKRs (every quarter)
  • Participate on the Reps weekly Call (weekly)
  • Interview MoCo and MoFo board members (once or twice per quarter)
  • Shape Reps program quarterly and yearly - via the Reps OKRs (in the beginning of each year and quarterly)
  • Lead the monthly newsletter (monthly)
  • Screen new applicants (quarterly)
  • Introduce new Reps to the program (quarterly)
  • Shape the coaching program (monthly)
  • Give feedback and overview the Activate campaign strategy (weekly)
  • Overviewing the Review Team (monthly)
  • Decide on the Reps program budget allocation (quarterly)
  • Lead community feedback and connect with it with Mozilla leadership
  • Lead the re-commitment process (quarterly)
  • Participate in the Council weekly Call (weekly)
  • Be in contact and reply within 72h (exceptions when absence is announced) to council threads

In conclusion the Reps Council consists of people that need to:

  • Take initiative on leading projects inside Reps
  • Be critical to help shape the volunteer strategy
  • Have a clear understand Mozilla’s current direction and goals
  • Have strategic thinking
  • Be able to communicate Reps mission and vision to the rest of the org and volunteers
  • Understand and be able to communicate Reps as the leading mobilizers program
  • Be able to articulate his/her opinion in strategic meetings
  • Be available to meet with the rest of the org on weekly basis
  • Have a strong background around the open web (and free software) movement
  • Expertise on the ground with local communities and grassroots efforts
  • Be recognized as a supportive leader inside the Mozilla community
  • Have existing relationships across the organization with both volunteers and employees

What are the current priority projects?

  • Coaching/Leadership: The project focuses on creating an self taught course for Reps that want to become coaches based on the Open leadership workshops
  • Re-commitment: With this project we will map the main interests of Reps and where they want to focus in the future. There are two main paths, Reps that want to be mobilizers - thus building local communities and Reps that want to be functional doers.
  • Comms: Project about communication strategy and best practices on engaging with our Reps and attracting new Reps. This projects includes the newsletter initiative, overseeing the facebook experiment as well as shaping the strategy on engaging with our communities

Based on the above let’s create “job” descriptions for people that want to commit on those responsibilities

In order to be applicable to apply for Mozilla Reps Council you need to fulfill the following the following criteria:

General skills:

  • Proficiency in English
  • Availability for extra Council duties (eg. chairing, staff meetings, work weeks etc…)
  • Ability to travel (once or twice per term)
  • Take initiative on leading projects inside Reps
  • Be critical to help shape the volunteer strategy
  • Have a clear understand Mozilla’s current direction and goals
  • Have strategic thinking
  • Be able to communicate Reps mission and vision to the rest of the org and volunteers
  • Understand and be able to communicate Reps as the leading mobilizers program
  • Be able to articulate his/her opinion in strategic meetings
  • Have a strong background around the open web (and free software) movement
  • Expertise on the ground with local communities and grassroots efforts
  • Be recognized as a supportive leader inside the Mozilla community
  • Have existing relationships across the organization with both volunteers and employees

Nice to have:

  • Geographically spread

Specific skills based on the 3 priority projects

Specialists on communication

  • Tasks that the specialist in comms will need to lead
  • Coordinating the comms efforts in the Reps program
    *Lead the newsletter initiative and coordinating with the facebook experiment
  • Build the comms strategy of the program and strategy on engaging with local communities
  • Skills:
  • Coordinating with various Reps and volunteers in the org
  • Social media savvy
  • Plus if they have worked on marketing projects in open source communities before

Coaching/Leadership

  • Tasks that the Coaching/leadership specialist will need to lead

  • Shape the coaching program

  • Coordinate with the volunteers that are providing feedback

  • Lead the screening for new coaches process

  • Skills

  • Strong background on coaching techniques

  • Preferable a coach themselves

  • Educational background

  • Worked with other open source communities on shaping coaching programs
