Listed and Unlisted: Addon Updates

As the addon review queue and the waiting times are unpredictable and too long at least for some types of updates, our users demand an unlisted version of the extension.

In theory, we would like to drop the unlisted version as soon as there’s a way to publish updates through AMO in a predictable way.

To drop the unlisted version, the user should not have to install / uninstall his unlisted extension. This would be possible, if the unlisted extension is automatically updated when there’s a new update to the AMO channel (with higher version number). Is this the case?

tl;dr If I have an unlisted and a listed version of my extension with matching GUIDs, is the unlisted version updated with higher version numbers published through AMO?

If you have an unlisted version, and it doesn’t have an update URL in its manifest, and you later release a listed version with a higher version number, the unlisted version will update to the listed version. Put differently, add-ons will always check AMO for updates, unless they have an update URL in the manifest.
